Kelly Latimore is a modern iconographer. In addition to writing* icons of modern saints, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, Nicholas Black Elk, and Mary Oliver, she also has several icons of the Holy Family and Christ showing them as vulnerable people: refugees, incarcerated, poor. View her gallery here.
What does it mean to depict Jesus Christ and the saints in this way? What does it say about where and how God meets us? *Icons are "written," not painted, because, in the orthodox tradition from which they come, writing an icon is consider to prayer more than art.
