While I would never want to trivialize faith by viewing God as some sort of personal assistant who affirms everything that I already believe (what would be the point of belief?), I also don't want to revert to my childhood interpetation of God as a stern, disapproving father figure who doles out love only when I follow The Rules. I'm hoping that I can find a more refined and mature relationship with Christ.

Yes, I think our images for God matters. I actually think they matter in one really important way: we need more of them. The Bible is filled with wonderful images for God, and we seem to have settled on just a few of them - God as a strict judge and God as a stern father. Perhaps there is a place for these images, but we miss so much about God if we permit our understanding to stop there. The Christian writer Kathleen Norris has a piece in her book _The Cloister Walk_ about how we need MORE metaphor in our faith!
